Is this the
OFFICIAL Cherokee site for Georgia?
Yes, we are one of two groups officially recognized on a state level
(not Federal). The other is The Cherokee of Georgia, Saint George,
Georgia 31646. Both are "descent" communities, or registries, that is,
associations of persons who have documented their descent from one
ancestor who was Cherokee and lived in the historical confines of the
state of Georgia. We are the only tribe responsible for maintaining
the Gov. Zell Miller Cherokee Roll.

How can I tell a "phoney" tribe
from an authentic one?
There are over 300 "Let's Pretend that we are Cherokee" groups in the
United States at this time. We are the only Cherokee tribe entitled to
use the Great Seal of the State of Georgia. Many bogus tribes charge
fees "for research," "membership assessments," "legal fees," or other
dues for "belonging" to them. You are wise to investigate what kind of
recognition they have or what kind of benefits they offer before
investing your hopes, dreams and reputation in membership.
Joining or being members of these organizations would no more "prove"
your Cherokee ancestry than membership in The Cherokee Bowling League
of Las Vegas NV or The Cherokee Health Center of Oklahoma City. Even
those who advertise they are "State Certified" or claim they have
"filed for federal recognition" often do not enjoy official status.

CAUTION - TAKE NOTICE:
The Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee
does not issue sub-charters to any group, either within the State or
without. There are certain individuals issuing fake Georgia Membership
cards from North Carolina to entire groups of wannabe Indians. One
such group is the Meherrin Indian Tribe of North Carolina. Their
members have been issued fake membership cards in the Georgia Tribe of
Eastern Cherokee. The offending party is a resident, not a member of
the Qualla Boundary in Cherokee, NC.
