Criteria for Enrollment, Georgia
Tribe of Eastern Cherokee
Enrollment in the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee is limited to
those people who can positively trace their ancestry back to one of
the many US Government Cherokee Indian Rolls. Documentation to that
ancestor must be complete, by providing birth and death records of all
your ancestors back to that individual. These records are available
through the Dept. of Vital Statistics, Birth and Death Records, in the
State in which you reside or the state of birth or death of your
ancestors. The actual roll number assigned to your Cherokee ancestor
must be included along with the name of the roll from which it was
taken. Remember, application numbers are NOT roll numbers. The actual
application where a roll number was assigned may be had by applying
for the application submitted by your Cherokee ancestor. Look
below for a complete list of recommended Genealogists.
To quote our brothers from the
Cherokee Nation, many people may have Cherokee ancestors, but if your
ancestor was not included on one of the many Cherokee rolls for
whatever reason they chose, then they basically gave up their
citizenship in the Cherokee nation. If that is your case, then you
will have to accept their decision. The Cherokee rolls are the primary
method we use as your acceptance for enrollment.
Applications for membership to the
Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee are handled by the tribe's Office of
Enrollment at the address shown below. You may request the enrollment
packet by email or if requesting an enrollment packet by postal
service, please include a $2 money order to cover the costs of mailing
the packet to you. Once you have completed your membership application
and family research, please mail the information packet along with a
$12.00 money order directly to our Office of Enrollment.
Unfortunately, this fee is not refundable. Applications sent to our
general offices may experience a delay in processing.
We do not do genealogy traces or
lookups; you must do your own or have a certified genealogist do it
for you. Those using self described “Indian Names“ will be discarded
without review. Enrollment may take as much as two months; all of our
staff members are volunteers. Some of the rolls are listed on the
Internet. You need to be careful, as some of them are only an index of
the Rolls and have only Application numbers.
The Southeast Regional Archives are

We suggest another web site loaded
with information:
http://www.nativeweb.org.
While we understand and appreciate
the desire of many, many people to conduct genealogy research, the
Georgia tribe of Eastern Cherokee simply doesn't have the resources to
provide extensive research on an individual.
Please be advised that the Georgia
Tribe of Eastern Cherokee is in no way affiliated with the web site:
GACHER.com, purporting to be Indian genealogist. Nor are they members
of the Tribe.
You may always do your own research,
but remember the burden of proof is on you. Most of the Cherokee
Indian rolls are listed on the web. You must however, through birth
and death records show your connection to the individual under which
you claim.
Remember, when writing a researcher,
enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. Do not send money until you
have made an arrangement concerning fees. Make your check or money
order payable to your researcher, not the Cherokee Nation in OK or NC.
